3 Airline Crews Report UFO as Big As A Battle Ship!

3 pilot crews report seeing giant ufo in faro portugal - BBC interview with captain Dennis Wood 3 Minutes 34 seconds - BBC - tardisdrwho2007 July 30, 1976 at 8:00 PM. Three pilot crews from 3 different airlines observed and confirmed seeing an unidentified flying object as big as a battle ship after being alerted by Lisbon Air Traffic Control Center. British Airways Captain Dennis Wood tells his story: Rare BBC interview with Captain Wood!

On May 14, 1977, the “Natal Daily News” from South Africa, published an article about this UFO incident titled “UFOs as big as battleships, pilots claim”. Here’s that article…

“UFOs As Big As Battleships”, Pilots Claim (May 14 1977)
For fear of being ridiculed, pilots of three airliners kept secret the sighting of three UFOs over Portugal, later described by one of them “as big and solid as battleships”.

British Airways Trident jet pilot, captain Dennis Wood, who has been flying with the airline for 20 years, said he and his crew first spotted the UFOs while flying from London to Faro.

The sighting, described by experts as the most important in the past decade, was also made by the crew of a British Tristar below the Trident and the pilot of a Portuguese airliner. All the stories tallied.

Captain Wood, 42, said he and the Tri-star crew made sighting reports when they arrived at London’s Heathrow airport but kept it all a secret for fear of being ridiculed. Captain Wood has come forward in the hope that Britain’s ufo experts will turn a serious eye to this particular sighting.

“Suggestions that the three objects were balloons, stars or satellites, strange clouds or reflections are quite unacceptable to us”, he said. “As I looked to the west we saw this very bright headlamp in the sky. All the cabin staff saw it too and I told the passengers. Then it was joined by two cigar-shaped objects as big and solid as battleships”.

On the return trip, captain Wood tilted his radar scanner. “There, in exactly the same spot, were these two cigar-shaped things. We got to within seven miles of them when they disappeared from our screen”.

  1. Tor Says:

C’mon, all you UFO dweebs, put on your tinfoil hats, and then tune in to a very very high frequency.

Its obvious to all our “government officials” that these deluded folks were: 1) hallucinating, 2) seeing swamp gas, 3) a display of the Northern Lights, or 4) all of the above, in unison.

Nothing to see here folks . . .

Stop being so silly! Just get on about your business and keep paying your taxes.

  2. Kevin72 Says:

So how come no one got a photo out of all the pilots and passengers?

  3. Zippy Says:

Because it was in 1977 you retard!

  4. Steve Says:

Kevin, suppose there are pictures… Would you believe it then ? I doubt it.

Most people are looking for answers that are present in their heads already. If you don’t believe in something, then you will easily “accept” every argument against it. That’s part of human nature.

I don’t think 6 pilots, their crews and half of their passengers smoked something that day. In my opinion, these kind of mass witness reports are better proof than any picture out there.

Thank you Tor, Kevin and Zippy for your visit!

  5. Hater Says:

Better proof? Like all the people in texas a couple weeks ago? How about all the people that mistake meteorites for large fast craft because of the illusions of depth perception. Even pilots, ‘experts’, have problems with it. Landing at night in areas that are not well lit can cause it.

If aliens made the trip to get here, they wouldn’t be messing up like that. We’d be contacted or colonized.

  6. Steve Says:

    No hold it, Hater…
Are you insinuating that ALL those folks in Texas saw meteorites?
When you say that even pilots have problems with their vision, then let me surprise you. I am an Airline Pilot! I know what kind of illusions pilots do see. But in the past 20 years, I have no recollection of landing my jet on any motorway or railroad.
And about the logics you’re expecting to find when asking certain questions… The UFO mystery is a highly illogical mystery… But that doesn’t mean the mystery is a farce.

  7. R. Brown Says:

the truth is out there Sculley….damn…where’d my poodle go?!!

  8. R. Brown Says:

the heavier duty tin foil works best though…but, it does interfere with the voices in my head…echoes suck…

  9. Perceptor Says:

The fact that after reading the article someone felt the need to argue against it in place of just clicking away seems to display an internal need to seek a truth that they may fear.
People see strange things. Bizarre things. Sometimes it’s a reflection or a hallucination. Sometimes it’s something else. If we always say it’s a hallucination, there is no need to question or grow. Science is like a very simple animal in that it evolves faster than it’s surroundings. What we “knew” to be “absolute” ten years ago has changed as our understanding of the universe has changed. Those that can’t evolve with it are doomed to live in a static age of no growth and call themselves such terms as smart and intellectual.

  10. Steve Says:

    Perceptor,

I like your response. It made my day… It really did!
I hope you’ll come back some day.

Good night, and thanks for stopping by!

    Steve

  11. Drew Says:

“Because it was in 1977 you retard!”

Yes, 1977, long before the invention of photography.

  12. PINOMAN Says:

Just because we can’t tag it doesn’t mean it’s extra.. although we don’t know.

  13. Geoff Says:

If aliens made the trip to get here, they wouldn’t be messing up like that. We’d be contacted or colonized.

Hey Hater - With the way our gov’t is being run, what makes you think we’re NOT colonized already?
    Just a thought….

  14. Geminate Says:

Actually that is a very very tiny UFO they describe. The largest one I ever saw was 7,000 feet across. No one should be afraid (like that is going to help), if they wanted to destroy us they would have done so centuries ago.

  15. Steve Says:

    Drew, Pinoman, Geoff and Geminate,
Thank you for your thoughts, opinions and inputs!

  16. Bussumarus Says:

    I’m generally open minded about the existence of aliens, but whether they’re visiting us or not is another thing altogether. When presented with such reports, I always return to Ockham’s Razor;

“two cigar-shaped objects as big and solid as battleships”

Is there ANY chance there was a couple of blimps out and about in 1977?

  17. Steve Says:

    Hi Bussumarus,
You’re right… anything that’s large and cigar-shaped could be a blimp. I thought of that as well. Being a pilot myself, I have witnessed some (not many) blimps before in my flying career. You’ll recognise them instantly. So I don’t think that’s what they saw.
BTW, cigar-shaped objects have been reported long before the invention of the blimp.
    Thanks for your input!

  18. Will Says:

“cigar-shaped objects as big and solid as battleships” ??

Is that all we get? They said the closest they got was 7 miles, then the objects “dissapeared”. Ever seen a battleship from 7 miles away without binoculars?

That they saw something, I’ll say that’s a good chance, but that is hardly any sort of evidence that they saw alien spacecraft, and I’m certainly not going to entertain the notion that because posters here can’t decide what it was using the ridiculously small portion of info from this article, it has to be an alien spacecraft. I need a LOT more before I’ll make a guess as to what it actually was, and anyone who says things like “Well what else can it be?” does not think these things through much, and even if “alien spacecraft” actually makes the list, it’s still further down the list than a lot of other things.

  19. Steve Says:

    Will,
Thanks for your reply. I don’t think the pilots said they witnessed an alien spaceship. They just thought that they deserved a better answer than “you probably halucinated”. And that’s why they stepped forward. In those days, blowing the UFO whistle was pretty dangerous for pilots (career-wise). The fact that Captain Wood did blow that whistle proves to me that he saw something exceptionally, something he described as one very bright object as big as a battleship and two cigar-shaped objects, estimated 400 yards in length. Three Unidentified Objects.

  20. Jerry Says:

You British need to lay off the ale.

  21. SilentK Says:

    Message for Tor…

Your a moron. Of course Aliens/UFOs/Other worldly beings are out there. Think about the galaxy, Humans have no sweet clue on how big it is and if it ever stops.
Millions of planets out there and you think we are the only ones in this mess? Your ignorance is astonishing.

  22. Norge Says:

Zippy says: “Because it was in 1977 you retard!”
That’s right, since some form of camera has been around since the time of DaVinci, it is too “retarded” to ask why there were no pictures. After the passengers were made aware of the object(s), there were apparently no cameras on board (which is the statement “Zippy” should have made. He is the retardate for implying that 1976 was prior to the existence of cameras.
There are usually multiple explanations for these sightings, but most folks go directly to “Little Green Men” before considering anything else. Yes, it IS a UFO… unidentified flying object. Not necessarily “Little Green Men.”

  23. Hamilton Says:

The MoD released it’s UFO sightings data for the last decade a few days ago. There’s a lot of interesting information to plow through. For the top ten UFO sighting cities in the UK, follow the link.

  24. Steve Says:

    Jerry, thanks for the joke…

SilentK, everybody is entitled to have an opinion.
Thanks for your vivid opinion. Come back soon!

Norge, you are right,… UFO means unidentified flying object. But I can’t accept the fact that the idea of a possible alien visitation is - in the eyes of the general public - soooooooooooo “far-fetched” and “crazy”. Apparently, the zillions of disinformation campaigns didn’t miss their effect.
Thanks for dropping by. Do come back one day. OK?

  25. Steve Says:

    Hamilton,
Thanks for your visit. I’ll have a look at your data. Looks interesting!

  26. SmooVe187 Says:

Its simply a fact that a UFO in its purist definition was present on that day in one form or another. Whether it was piloted by an earthling, an alien, or not at all is the question. As stated before, aliens are less probable due to the advanced level of technology and understanding of space travel needed to allow visitors from other solar systems would almost certainly confirm the ability to aquire positions of matter around them enough to avoid encountering us if desired. While on the other hand if considering the UFO’s assumed undesired presence and unveiling to the passengers that day, it is very likely due to a malfunction and/or lack of understanding that caused the incident. If it were humans it would definately be technology that was in the testing stages and suseptable to failure, possibly the very reason the 2 cigars were later in place, to taxi the vehicle. Either way, if the UFOs presence was the will of its operator, im sure they’d hav been back, maybe even never left. Personally, i hope for a mix of the 2 scenarios, being that the UFO was piloted by a human, but its origins itself being not of this world. -A

  27. Perceptor Says:

The universe is immense relative to us. This idea doesn’t mean it’s as gargantuan for another species. Maybe an older species. That’s if we were to agree that if there is life alien to our world it came from the stars. Recently, we’ve realized that there is the probability of a multiverse, as sci-fi as that may come across. What’s to say that the “little green men” are just another version of human evolution from another, parallel earth.

I also think it’s important to remember that the only time “7 Miles” is even mentioned in the article, it’s when they come across the same activity on the return trip. The tells me that there was first a closer, visual sighting with radar information to back up the pilot’s idea of the craft’s size and then another radar detection by the same crew without visual contact. I should hope that the pilot wouldn’t feel anxiety over seeing a blimp.

As for the lack of photo evidence. Only now do we trully live in the picture ready age. Everyone has a camera of some sort now and I would expect that if the same situation were to happen now, several folks might chance damage to the aircraft by flipping open their phones and snapping a keepsake. 1977 would have found the likelihood of even one person on either of those flights with a camera at the ready near impossible if only because of the cumbersomeness of even the most sophisticated cameras of that time.

  28. dennis Says:

anyone debating this article is stupid. this is just another ONE sighting among hundreds without photo evidence..among OTHER hundreds that have photographs to support what people saw. If you saw something in the sky that you have never seen before…whether it be too far to get a good idea. you can’t just be so geocentric and think we are the only ones out there, and just shoot down any remote thought of aliens that live millions of light years away that are far more technologically advanced than us. And for the moron that thinks the aliens are here to destroy us…well that’s just such a typical ignorant American response. And for all you potheads out there reading this, I’m sure you will be even more interested in the movie 2001:A Space Odyssey. go watch it.

  29. Brian Says:

I would like to see someone follow up on such sightings OBJECTIVELY. Seems to me that there are two unbalanced camps out there - those who insist it’s alien, and those who insist it didn’t exist at all. If we are to be objective, we can start by ACTUALLY qualifying the observations and then pursuing an explanation.

If these people did in fact see something, which I believe would follow up to be a confirmed sighting of SOMETHING, then the question remains as to what it might have been. Could have been any number of things that are terrestrial in origin, but just kept secret i.e. government craft, etc.

Why some people have a need to make themselves look like idiots by making stupid off-topic remarks about tin foil hats is beyond me. There is a worthy rational pursuit in asking these questions, even if they are ultimately fruitless.

There are many things that science has only BEGUN to explain, even though observation has held consistent throughout time. How can accepted established knowledge currently understood as FACT be at conflict with itself? Yet even now, we still find ourselves head scratching about what might be a proper unified theory of physics. We know that there must be an answer, just that it’s unknown, even though we observe the effects every day.

Why is it that rather than address an actual question or issue, the first approach is to discredit the observer or even the inquiring spectator without even looking at the phenomenon itself? I don’t think anyone here presumes a tin foil hat will provide the answer to any of these questions except perhaps how irrational and logically incapable some pundits are at making a genuine argument.

However interesting the topic is, I’m sure we would ALL be relieved if someone could provide a compelling argument to DISPROVE it as much as the CONFIRM it as alien in nature. Nobody’s looking for a shortcut or a cop-out here except for Tor and his tin-foil posse.

  30. Steve Says:

SmooVe187, Good copy. Thanks for your thoughts, but one can’t be sure about anything here. Hopefully, one day we’ll all know what’s going on!

  31. Steve Says:

    Hi Perceptor
You did come back! :-) Thanks!
I think many people approach the mystery from a human “what we know so far” point of view and have a hard problem to think outside the box. I like that idea of a parrallel universe, or a multiverse as it may be called, or the idea of other dimensions that may interfere with ours, among many other radical ideas.
Keep your eyes on the new upcoming posts, as I am about to post a short video that pretty much explains it all!

  32. Steve Says:

    Hi Dennis,
Thanks for dropping by. Yeah, I saw that movie a couple of times. Fantastic!
About the foto-evidence… Professor August Meessen did some reseach on “lack of foto-evidence” in response to the fact that some people who took pictures of the Belgian UFO (1990) were amazed that nothing - or less than the eye could see - was captured. Let me quote the study…

Two photographs taken in 1990 during the Belgian UFO flap show less and more than the human eye detected. This is attributed, by scientific means, to IR and UV light. The UV light results from an ionization that activates an auxiliary guiding system. The same source can be used to produce “solid light” beams. It is proposed that they could correspond to ionic plasma waves.

For a detailed look at that study, here it is: case study (in French)

  33. Steve Says:

    Brian,
I sincerely hope that thousands read your reply. Discrediting the observer is a lot easier than trying to explain the overwhelming facts. No matter what they are,… UFOs do exist. I won’t insist they are alien, but after what I have seen, it wouldn’t surprise me at all. Thanks for your excellent thoughts on this!

  34. mikdfour Says:

The only thing good about UFO’s is listening to Art Bell as I fall asleep (chuckle myself to sleep).

  35. Perceptor Says:

“LITTLE GREEN MEN HAVE LANDED TO ENSLAVE US ALL!!!” I’m an American. I like to believe that I think like an atypical American. That being said, I don’t think they are here to enslave us in any sense we could completely comprehend. I would think that if anything negative were in the mix, it would have already come to pass. In the vast expanse of the universe, our concepts are but a fraction of all possible thought. They say that every story has been told but really it’s only every story that has a foundation in human thought and intellect.

We may never understand the motives of races more advanced than ourselves but at this point isn’t that half the fun. Conjecture. Posting ideas, no matter how far fetched or left brained. If we really want to know what is going on, the only thing we can do is wait. Wait for something major to alter the way we view our little plot of reality.

The real question is, who is going to be able to cope with a change in the status quo? Religious zealots tend to fold under pressure of change if for no reason other than they are hardwired in their beliefs. I like to take a philosophy posted forth by the late Bruce Lee. In his martial arts, one is to be fluid. Don’t make a fist while at rest because that only locks you into a certain type of attack. I think this goes the same for everything. Be like water in all you do and you will never be caught off guard. If we limit our theories to that which is easily proven, then when the rules change all that has come to pass will be for naught.

  36. Perceptor Says:

Steve, thanks for welcoming to the fold.

  37. Steve Says:

    Hi Perceptor,
Thank you (again) for another great comment. I am a fan! :-)

  38. John Perkins Says:

UFOs are craft that appear from dimensions of which we are not aware … they pop in and out of our universe, check things out then go back to their parallel universe.

  39. Steve Says:

    Hi John,
Thanks for your comment. I think you hit the nail on its head. Have you seen this short animation? I hope you’ll enjou it. :-)
    Thanks again!!!
